How to Prepare for a Professional Headshot Session: A Complete Guide
Your headshot isn’t “just a photo”—it’s your first handshake.
If you’re an entrepreneur, executive, realtor, attorney, consultant, creative… basically anyone who does business with humans… your headshot is doing work for you long before you ever walk into the room.
And here’s the truth: you don’t need to look “perfect.” You just need to look like you on your best day—confident, approachable, professional, and unmistakably YOU.
Let’s get you dialed in.
Wardrobe: keep it clean, classic, and on-brand
Your clothing should support your face—not compete with it.
Go solid and timeless. Neutrals like navy, charcoal, black, white, and gray photograph beautifully and keep attention where it belongs: your expression.
Dress for your lane. If you’re corporate, lean structured. If you’re creative, you can soften it—just keep it intentional.
Bring options. A “boardroom” look and a “modern approachable” look gives you versatility for LinkedIn, your website, speaker bio, press, and more.
Fit matters. Wrinkles, baggy sleeves, and weird collar gaps show up fast. Try it on, move around, and make sure it sits right.
Grooming: polished, not overdone
This is where a little prep goes a long way.
Haircut timing: 2–5 days before is the sweet spot—fresh, but not “first day awkward.”
Skin and hydration: Drink water, moisturize, and avoid anything new that might irritate your skin.
Facial hair: Keep it sharp and intentional. If you shave, do it the day of (and give yourself time to calm any redness).
Makeup (if you wear it): Camera makeup is about evening tone and reducing shine—not changing your face.
Expressions: practice the “real you” look
Most people don’t need a new face—they need a relaxed face.
Spend 3 minutes in a mirror:
Try a soft smile, then a slightly bigger one.
Relax your jaw.
Breathe out before the shutter clicks.
Think: “I’ve got this.” Because you do!
Communication: Your vision is important so communicated it to your photographer
A great headshot isn’t accidental. Before we shoot, I want to know:
Where will this be used? LinkedIn only, website, media kit, speaking, internal directory, all of the above?
What’s your brand vibe? Executive, friendly expert, luxury service provider, bold creative, etc.
Background preference: clean studio, colored, environmental office look, outdoor, or something in-between.
Retouching expectations: My approach is natural polish—clean distractions, keep you human.
Day-of: arrive calm, not rushed
Here’s the play:
Be sure that you’re rested and not rushed.
Arrive a few minutes early.
Don’t show up starving or overstuffed.
And bring a good attitude—energy shows in your eyes.
Final check: the tiny details that make the image feel “premium”
Right before we shoot:
Smooth the shirt/jacket.
Straighten collars and ties.
Quick shine check.
Hair in place.
